How to choose the right laptop

Buying a laptop? Here's a simple way to match the specs to how you'll actually use it.

With so many models on the shelf, choosing a laptop comes down to one question: what will you actually do with it? Here's how to match the specs to your needs.

1. Start with the processor (CPU)

For browsing, documents and video, an Intel Core i3/i5 or AMD Ryzen 3/5 is plenty. For heavy multitasking, design work or gaming, step up to a Core i7/Ryzen 7 or higher.

2. RAM decides how smooth it feels

  • 8GB — fine for everyday use and light multitasking.
  • 16GB — the sweet spot for most people in 2025.
  • 32GB+ — for video editing, virtual machines and serious workloads.

3. Always choose an SSD

A solid-state drive makes the biggest difference to everyday speed. Aim for at least 256GB; 512GB if you store lots of files. Avoid old spinning hard drives as your main disk.

4. Screen and battery

A Full HD (1920×1080) screen is the practical minimum. If you travel, look for 8+ hours of real-world battery. Bigger screens are nicer at a desk; 13–14 inches are easier to carry.
